Early in 2025 I read the first book below. After a little more research I changed my diet and reduced my intake of ultra processed foods ( mostly carbs) and sugar ( especially highly processed). I also went on the 16 8 intermittent fasting, only eating 2 meals a day within an 8 hour period. Otherwise I can eat as much as I want so no calorie reduction or starving myself. Without changing much else in my life I managed to lose 20 pounds. It’s really a good idea to take charge of your health because our food and healthcare industries won’t be doing it for you. It really turns out our food guidelines have been one big experiment on our health, and it’s killing us slowly…
Some of the books I’ve been reading:

Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind : Dr. Georgia Ede reveals that the most powerful way to change brain chemistry is with food, because that’s where brain chemicals come from in the first place. This is the first book of many I’ve read about health and nutrition lately. This helped me understand how your body processes food and how it is used to keep our bodies going. Her focus is how the breakdown of nutrients also affects the brain. The first part does this in great detail. The second part she outlines diet examples depending on your personal physical and mental health.

The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet
Nina Teicholz breaks down why our Standard American Diet (SAD) has been on the wrong track for a long time and the whole ‘Low Fat’ diet is actually killing us. Also had good explanations of good fat vs. bat fat

The Case Against Sugar: Gary Taubes explains how sugar came to be so important in the food industry to make bad foods palatable. It opens your eyes to why the amount of sugar in our diet is causing so many sick people by causing widespread insulin resistance leading to diabetes rates skyrocketing.

Food Intelligence: The Science of How Food Both Nourishes and Harms Us. Probably one of the best books I’ve read from the group. The authors both are good at breaking down how our SAD diet came about and why the western world is suffering health wise because of it. Can be a heavy read but well worth the effort.

The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability by Lierre Keith. A personal story from a recovering vegetarian. Lot’s of great details on why humans should have animal protiens and fats in their diet.

Always Hungry: Leading Harvard Medical School Expert and “Obesity Warrior” Dr. David Ludwig rewrites the rules on weight loss, diet, and health. His bestselling book incorporates 25+ years of research and sound science. Really good a detailing how addictive the food additives used in the food industry drive our brain to always want to eat ‘junk food’.

Life in the Fasting Lane: How to Make Intermittent Fasting a Lifestyle, and Reap the Benefits of Weight Loss and Better Health Jason Fung, Eve Mayer, Megan Ramos. Great explanations on how occasional fasting helps your body functions to burn fat.
